Support in Schools

Emerge offers services to schools, aiming to inspire change in the lives of young people through improving their engagement in education.

School is a crucial part of creating positive life journeys for young people but the available resources to remove the barriers to a successful education for the most vulnerable and disengaged pupils are often limited.

emerge offer a range of services which can be tailored to the needs of individuals and groups of young people within a school.  We have had real success by linking our professional school based interventions with our ‘wrap around’ youth work offer in the community, all built on the foundation of our relational approach.

Every school has pupils who seem disengaged, have differing levels of absences, display unexplained behaviours, and appear anxious or stressed without obvious reason. These pupils may be journeying through bereavement, struggling with poor mental health, be experiencing family pressure or be overly vulnerable to poor self-esteem and peer pressure. All too often these factors result in pupils achieving lower than expected results and progressing at slower rates.   Anxiety, isolation and loneliness have all been recurring themes which have increased since the pandemic.

Our Services – How we can support your pupils and your school

We can provide the following for pupils you identify as needing extra support:

One to One Intervention – A bespoke programme developed around the needs of an individual young person. We aim to build their self-esteem, develop resilience, and increase socio-emotional skills whilst addressing the specific area of need in their life.

Group Work Intervention – Our purpose-designed material tackles key issues faced by young people that become barriers to learning effectively. Our groups develop socio-emotional understanding enabling them to work through their feelings, thoughts and actions, and progress to different behaviours. Commonly used topic areas are:

Bereavement, Stress Management, Self-esteem, Understanding Anger, Transition, Self-awareness, Friendship and Relationships.

Support for ‘Children Looked After’ – Any young person can struggle, but for care experienced young people there is an extra layer of complexity in their lives. We have therefore initiated a programme to promote the wellbeing of Looked After young people across transition from primary to secondary education in partnership with Bradford Virtual School. Many schools also engage us to further support Looked After young people as they continue through their education.

Wider engagement – We have worked with some schools over many years, and developed different ways to support pupils and the school as a whole. These include support for PPA cover, music groups, sports coaching, team building activities and other extra-curricular activities.

We believe that working in partnership with your school staff and systems we can be part of the answer for your most vulnerable learners to start achieving their potential. If working with us could help you transform the lives of young people, please give us a call or contact us.

Wrap around youth work – We believe our work in schools, and our community youth work are both improved when joined up, and we know young people who engage in both see increased impact. We can support a young person in school during the day, and meet them more informally within a community youth work session after school, involving them in on-going positive activities. This is our wrap-around support and we are committed to South East Bradford communities to ensure this is delivered.

emerge have proven an invaluable asset to the students that have accessed the service. The caring approach that they offer to the students is outstanding. The staff member who works at BBEC goes above and beyond for the students, ensuring when they meet them in school it doesn’t encroach on their learning. A couple of guardians have informed me that they found the service extremely helpful, and noticed a vast improvement in the child’s behaviour and wellbeing. The school has also noticed a positive improvement in the children within the school environment

Our focus is on developing emotional capacity, self-esteem and patterns of behaviour that enable a child to re-engage with learning and establish stability and resilience. Results are often seen in a matter of weeks and our presence proves to be a lifeline for many children.
